Empowering Students Through Home Libraries
River City Reading Rush increases reading proficiency for middle school students through a relationship-based approach that creates excitement about reading and encourages students to build literacy skills by reading independently and with peers. Literacy mentors lead group sessions where students read aloud and practice foundational reading skills. Outside of school, students
track independent reading, earning badges and reading-related prizes along the way!
Objectives

Create an energetic reading environment by building relationships with students as mentors and models of literacy skills.

Increase foundational literacy skills for older students who are reading below grade level.

Provide a safe environment for students to give and receive support from peers with similar learning goals.

Create school to home connections that promote reading.
Key Components
AFTER SCHOOL AND SUMMER LITERACY PROGRAM
Organize community book drives to collect new and gently used books
Partner with local schools, libraries, and businesses to set up collection points
Encourage donations from families, local authors, and publishers
Home Library Book Curation
Provide a diverse selection of books that cater to various age groups and interests, including fiction, non-fiction, and educational materials
Offer bilingual books to support culturally and linguistically diverse students
Create personalized home libraries for students that are aligned with their interests and Lexile level, including books in the "stretch' Lexile range that encourage growth in reading skills
Distribution Events and Workshops
Host distribution events at schools, community centers, and libraries where students can select books to take home to build personal libraries
Organize engaging activities such as storytelling sessions, author readings, and workshops that build literacy skills
Reading Challenges
Launch reading challenges that encourage students to set reading goals that increase reading frequency and number of books read
Offer incentives such as bookmarks, certificates, and small prizes for participation, achieving goals, and successful program completion
Family Engagement
Provide resources and workshops for parents that give guidance on how to support their children's reading habits at home
Facilitate a "Reading Together" program where families can build literacy skills together by participating in reading sessions and discussions
